Produce crispers: which ones do anything

Updated August 2026 · 7 min read

Most produce keepers are a plastic box with a hole in the lid. They do nothing your existing crisper drawer doesn't already do, and the ones sold in three-packs at the front of the store are almost all in this category.

Two technologies do work, and here's the part nobody tells you: they solve different problems. Buy the wrong one for what's rotting in your fridge and you'll conclude the whole category is a scam.

Problem one: ethylene

Fruits and vegetables emit ethylene gas as they ripen, and ethylene accelerates ripening in everything nearby. A single ripe apple will age a bag of broccoli noticeably faster. This is why storing produce together is worse than storing it separately, and why your crisper drawer, a sealed box full of mixed produce, is one of the worst places in the fridge for anything sensitive.

OXO's GreenSaver line attacks this directly. Each keeper uses an activated carbon filter that traps and absorbs the ethylene before it can build up. Inside, a removable basket lifts produce off the bottom so it isn't sitting in its own condensation, and a vent on the lid slides open and closed to set the humidity level. There's an illustrated guide printed on the lid telling you which produce wants high humidity (vent closed) and which wants low (vent open), which sounds like a gimmick until you realize it's the only reason the same container works for both lettuce and peppers.

Best for mixed produce

OXO GreenSaver Produce Keeper, Large (5 qt)

Sized for carrots, zucchini, cucumbers and other long produce. Adjustable vent, removable basket, carbon filter. This is the one to start with if you don't know what you need . The 5-quart holds enough to be useful rather than a novelty.

The 4.3-quart version is the better shape for round things, heads of broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, peppers, tangerines. If you buy one of each you cover most of a weekly shop.

Best for heads and rounds

OXO GreenSaver Produce Keeper, 4.3 qt

Same carbon filter and vent system, proportioned for broccoli and lettuce rather than long produce. BPA-free and dishwasher safe, like the rest of the line.

One real cost to know about before you commit: the carbon filters are consumable. OXO sells refill four-packs, and you'll be buying them. Budget for that.

Problem two: the gas balance itself

Rubbermaid's FreshWorks line takes a different approach. Rather than absorbing ethylene, its FreshVent membrane regulates the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the lid, holding the air inside at a composition that slows respiration. The elevated CrispTray at the bottom does the same job as OXO's basket, keeping produce out of pooled moisture and letting air circulate underneath.

The practical advantage is maintenance: the FreshVent filter is rated for the lifetime of the container. No refills, no consumable cost, nothing to forget. Over three years that difference is real money against the OXO line.

What you give up is control. There's no adjustable vent, so you can't tune humidity for what's inside. Rubbermaid's own guidance is that the containers work best with one type of produce each, which is true of both brands but matters more here, since you can't compensate with the vent.

Best set to start with

Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce Saver, 4-piece set

Medium and large containers with lids. Bases nest inside each other and one lid fits multiple bases, so the empty ones don't eat a shelf. The sensible entry point . You get two sizes and find out which one you reach for.

Best single container

Rubbermaid FreshWorks Saver, Medium, 7.2 cup

One container, no commitment. Good size for berries or a bunch of herbs. Buy this first if you want to test whether the technology does anything for your habits before spending set money.

If your problem is the drawer itself

There's a middle option people miss. Rather than replacing your crisper drawer with containers, you can put a GreenSaver insert into the drawer you already have. It brings the carbon filter and the elevated platform to the existing space without asking you to reorganize the fridge around a container system.

This is the right call if your crisper drawer is full every week. Containers waste space at the edges; the drawer doesn't.

Best for a full drawer

OXO GreenSaver Standing Crisper Drawer Insert

Carbon filtration and airflow for the drawer you already own. Cheapest way into the category, and the only one that doesn't cost you shelf space.

Four rules that matter more than the container

  1. Store it unwashed. Surface water is what starts rot. Wash immediately before eating, not when you get home.
  2. One type per container. Both brands say this and both are right. Mixing defeats the ethylene control entirely.
  3. Condensation inside is normal. Rubbermaid explicitly says it means the system is working. Don't wipe it out and don't assume it's a defect.
  4. Transfer the day you shop. Every hour produce spends in a grocery bag on the counter is time you don't get back later.

What to buy

If you throw away leafy greens and herbs, get OXO . The adjustable vent is doing work no other product does, and greens are the most humidity-sensitive thing in your fridge. If you throw away berries and hardier vegetables, get Rubbermaid and never think about filters again. If your crisper drawer is already stuffed, get the drawer insert and skip containers entirely.

What you should not do is buy the unbranded three-pack. A vented plastic box with no filter and no membrane is a plastic box.
